When Dylan Zangwill walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage, he didn’t introduce himself like someone desperate for attention.
The 14-year-old from Pennsylvania was actually fairly modest about his music.
When Simon Cowell asked whether people at school knew he could sing, Dylan explained that they knew he was musical, but he wasn’t someone who liked talking about himself very much.
Then he sat down at the piano.
And suddenly there was no need for him to explain anything.
He Chose One of Queen’s Biggest Songs
Dylan performed “Somebody to Love” by Queen.
That is not an easy song to take on.
It demands range, power and enough personality to survive comparisons with Freddie Mercury.
But Dylan didn’t simply stand behind a microphone and imitate the original.
He played the piano himself and gradually built the performance from the keyboard.
The first strong notes immediately caught the audience’s attention.
His Voice Sounded Far Older Than 14
The biggest surprise was the contrast.
Dylan looked like a normal teenager sitting behind the piano.
Then the larger notes arrived.
His voice had a bluesy, rock-influenced quality that sounded much more mature than the judges expected.
Howie Mandel seemed especially drawn to the joy Dylan brought to the performance, while Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara also responded enthusiastically.
Simon described it as a great audition and suggested there was more to come from him.
Three Judges Were on Their Feet
By the end of the song, the audience was standing.
Heidi, Sofia and Howie also rose to applaud Dylan.
Simon remained seated, but his feedback was still positive.
Then came the vote.
Dylan received four yes votes and moved forward.
For someone who had just admitted he didn’t like talking much about his own talent, the performance had done all the talking for him.
Music Had Been Part of His Life for Years
Dylan’s ability at the piano didn’t appear overnight.
His own biography says he started playing piano when he was very young and later picked up guitar as well.
As he grew older, he became interested in rock, blues, jazz, soul and gospel — influences that helped shape the mature sound people heard during his AGT audition.
That background helps explain why the Queen song sounded natural rather than forced.
His AGT Journey Continued
Although Dylan was not initially selected for the regular live-show lineup after deliberations, his AGT story wasn’t finished.
He later returned for the Wildcard show, where he performed “House of the Rising Sun” on a Hammond organ.
He did not receive enough votes to advance into the Quarterfinals, but the experience gave him a much larger audience.
After AGT, Dylan continued performing and writing original material.
He later appeared on American Idol Season 21 and earned a Golden Ticket to Hollywood with an original song.
Sometimes You Don’t Need to Talk About Your Talent
That may be the most fitting part of Dylan Zangwill’s first AGT appearance.
Before singing, he admitted that he wasn’t someone who liked talking about himself.
Then he sat behind a piano and chose Queen.
A few minutes later, the audience and three judges were standing.
Dylan didn’t have to tell anyone how much music meant to him.
They could hear it.
