When Freddie Combs appeared on The X Factor USA in 2012, he wasn’t walking into an ordinary audition.
A few years earlier, his health had reached a dangerous point.
Freddie said he had once weighed more than 900 pounds and had come close to losing his life. By the time he appeared on the show, he had already lost hundreds of pounds through changes to his diet and lifestyle.
But when he arrived in front of the judges, Freddie didn’t want the moment to be only about what he had been through.
He wanted them to hear his voice.
His Wife Had Been Beside Him Through Everything
Freddie came to the audition with his wife, Kay.
The two had been married for 16 years at the time, and Freddie spoke openly about how much she had supported him as his health became more difficult.
He described her as one of the most important people in his life.
So when it came time to choose a song, Freddie made the performance personal.
He dedicated “Wind Beneath My Wings” to her.
Then He Started Singing
The introduction had focused heavily on Freddie’s health and life story.
But once the music began, the attention moved somewhere else.
His voice.
Freddie delivered the song slowly and emotionally, allowing the lyrics to carry the meaning of the dedication.
L.A. Reid described the voice as “heavenly,” while Britney Spears said she was surprised by how strong the performance was.
Demi Lovato also responded to the emotion behind the song.
Simon Saw More Than One Performance
Simon Cowell was impressed too, but his response went beyond the audition itself.
He told Freddie that while listening, he imagined him someday standing and singing while healthier and happier.
Simon offered his support if Freddie continued working on his health.
Freddie accepted the challenge.
The exchange turned what could have been a simple yes-or-no decision into something much more personal.
Four Yes Votes
When voting time arrived, there was no doubt.
Freddie received four yes votes.
Simon said yes.
Britney said yes.
Demi said yes.
L.A. Reid said yes.
Freddie was through to the next stage of the competition.
For someone who had once spent long periods unable to leave home, simply reaching that stage was already a major moment.
The Voice Became the Focus
What makes Freddie’s audition memorable is that viewers initially learn about all the obstacles around him.
His health.
His wheelchair.
The years of difficulty.
But once he starts singing, the story becomes much simpler.
It becomes about a man singing to the woman who had stayed beside him through everything.
That emotional connection is what gave the performance its weight.
Freddie’s run on the competition did not last deep into the season, but the audition remained one of the memorable moments from The X Factor USA Season 2.
A Performance Bigger Than the Competition
Freddie continued working on his health in the years after the show.
He died in 2021 at age 49 after kidney failure, with his wife Kay later saying she was grateful to have spent 25 years as his wife and best friend.
That makes the audition especially moving to watch today.
Not because of where Freddie finished in the competition.
But because for a few minutes, he was able to stand emotionally in front of millions of viewers and let his voice speak for him.
